History

Saraswathi Kala Kendra was started in a small shed on July 1st 1994, with just 7 students (3 for dance and 4 for yoga). On October 5th  "Ardhanareeshwarar” a dance drama was exhibited at Jalakandeshwarar temple during Navarathri celebration with just 5 students. This made Kendra to expand with Vocal and Mirdangam classes from Vijayadasami. After 3 months Violin classes were started. Slowly Veena, Sanskrit, Thevaram and Free hand drawing classes were introduced all under one roof. Sri.Shanmuga Sundharam sir, Principal of Adyar Music Colleage guided Smt.Deepa Surendran in various aspects of Kendra. Sarawathi Kala Kendra has a beautiful and natural ambience and at present more than 200 students are learning various spiritual art forms here. The students of Kendra actively participate in various programmes held in and around the city.

Various workshops and lecture demonstrations are conducted within Kendra for the betterment of the students. To develop the ability of the students, concerts are arranged on regular basis where many great artists come and perform. In the recent years budding artists and youngsters are also called for concerts. Various festivals are celebrated to mould children with our culture. 11 students of kendra have done Arangetram in dance. Students are also made to gain theoretical knowledge of the art they are learning and are sent to Government Technical exams on regular basis. Dreams of Smt.Deepa Surendran were made true on the 19th Annual day of Kendra, where a dance drama “Krishna Krishna Krishna” choreographed by the senior dance students was supported in orchestra by the senior music students of kendra. Kendra now has its own orchestra of senior music students supporting the dance programmes.
